Collaborative Provider Panel to Discuss Obesity in
Public Forum
|
Problem:
Nearly 31 percent of all U.S.
adults are obese and more than 34 percent are
overweight. Each year, more than 300,000 deaths in
the U.S. can be attributed to obesity-related health
conditions. In 2000, Americans spent $33 billion on
weight loss programs, products and services, and
$117 (billion?) in healthcare costs directly related
to the management of these obesity-related
conditions. Excess weight and physical inactivity
are associated with a number of serious health
conditions, including high blood pressure, heart
disease, stroke, aggravation of chronic back pain
and osteoarthritis, diabetes, and many more.
Response:
To shed light on this serious
societal problem and how it affects public health,
the California State Oriental Medical Association (CSOMA)
is convening a six person multi-disciplinary panel
of healthcare providers on Saturday, April 5, 2003,
from 1:30-5:30 p.m. to discuss obesity from diverse
perspectives. Participants will include licensed
acupuncturists, herbalists, a physician,
chiropractor, and a cardiac care RN who are in
active practice. Following brief presentations,
attendees are invited to enter into a group dialog.
Martha Benedict, M.S., L.Ac., as moderator, and
panelist Tony Kuo, M.D., have concurred: “Obesity
is rising at an alarming rate, and it is time this
issue is collaboratively addressed from the
perspectives of Eastern, Western medical
disciplines, as each brings unique value in
responding to this critical public health
dilemma.”
Who
Can Attend: The
panel is open to all healthcare practitioners as well as
the public at-large and will include an interactive
discussion with the audience. The panel is but one of
several seminars at CSOMA’s 14th annual Oriental
Medical Conference. Before and after this event,
attendees are invited to tour the conference vendor
area, where an increased exposure and understanding of
Oriental Medicine can be gained.
Event
Sponsor: The
California State Oriental Medical Association, CSOMA, is
a professional organization of licensed acupuncturists
and supporters of Oriental medicine dedicated to the
preservation and advancement of the art, science, and
practice of Oriental medicine in a caring and ethical
manner, thereby enhancing the health and well-being of
the general public. For more information call the CSOMA
office at 1-800-477-4564 or 916-455-0347.
